Does any derailleur fit any bike
A derailleur for your mountain bike should match the specifications on the original derailleur. That is, while it doesn't need to be the same model of derailleur, it does need to be the same brand, in almost every case. It also needs to match the number of gears, or have more intended.31 Jul 2011
Are bike derailleurs universal
Shimano derailleur compatibility
Most 8- and 9-speed Shimano mountain bike and road kit is inter-compatible because they both use the same cable pull ratio. This means that you can use an 8 -or 9-speed mountain bike derailleur with road shifters or vice versa.29 Jun 2020
Can you mix shifters and derailleurs
In many instances, it is possible to mix different levels of shifters and derailleurs from the same brand (e.g. Dura-Ace/Ultegra/105; Red/Force/Rival; Super Record/Record/Chorus), however it's not safe to assume that this will always be the case.28 Dec 2017
What does a bike derailleur do
The rear derailleur is the mechanism that shifts the chain at the rear sprockets. There are many different models but they all share the same basic design and functionality. Derailleurs are secured to the bike with a mounting bolt to the frame's derailleur hanger.29 Jul 2017
Where is the derailleur on a bike
The derailleur is the device that changes gears by moving the chain from one sprocket to another. There are two derailleurs: one on the rear and one on the front. The highest ratio (when the bike can go fastest) is produced when the chain is on the biggest sprocket in the front and the smallest in back.
What is the use of front derailleur on a bike
The front derailleur is the mechanism that shifts the chain on bike with more than one front chainring. There are many different makes and models, but they all share the same basic design and functionality. Front derailleurs are attached to the bike with either a clamp or bracket.29 Jul 2017
How do I know what size derailleur cage to get
The distance between the upper and lower pulleys of the derailleur define the cage length. A big range between the small and large cogs on your rear cassette (11 – 32, for example), or a big difference between the chainring sizes on the front crankset, can mean more slack is created when you move to the smaller rings.
When should you replace rear derailleur
Derailleurs will last almost indefinitely. The jockey wheels will wear out in time (tens of thousands of km) but the rest of the mechanism shouldn't see significant wear. It could be that the spring will break at some point due to material fatigue, but that is also a relatively easy to replace part on most derailleurs.
Do derailleur springs wear out
That said, derailleur springs will lose tension overtime, and pivots will get sloppier. Shifters can wear out too (if you ride enough), and most cannot be serviced back to health. But before you go sinking money into these more expensive components, best try a new cable/housing or get a second opinion.17 Aug 2016
Will any derailleur work
Pretty much any front derailer will work with any modern chain system. It is true that the cages have gotten slightly narrower to match the narrower chains used on systems with more rear sprockets, but this is rarely a problem in practice. See also my Article on "Speeds."
